In recent years, the Marine & Offshore industry has experienced a variety of challenges, from a decline in new ship orders to increasing complexity and high shipbuilding costs. Shipbuilder Huangpu Wenchong, a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and one of the largest shipyards building military and commercial cargo ships, also faces these challenges.
Forced to improve productivity and reduce costs in order to increase its competitiveness, the company decided to adopt Dassault Systèmes’ marine and offshore industry solution experiences based on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform for design and production planning.
Thanks to the platform’s integrated approach, disparate and disconnected software for design, production and project management are no longer a problem. With one single source of data, Huangpu can manage and control ship development in real-time. Furthermore, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform tackles key production planning activities such as manufacturing assembly, process planning and the generation of 3D interactive work instructions to help optimize production.
Moreover, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform helps to stay aligned with compliance standards while improving design. With more than 100 designers being involved in the 2,700 TEU container ship program, the platform is used to model four major disciplines including the ship’s structure, machinery, electronics, and equipment. Another benefit of using digital models is that every aspect of the design can be reviewed and demonstrated to the customer to collect their comments and final changes.
For the engineers at Huangpu Wenchong the largest value brought on by the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is the integration of the design and manufacturing processes and the ability to see how one affects the other. In the future, Huangpu Wenchong aims to adopt additional Dassault Systèmes’ solutions to further improve the quality of designs and the efficiency of the build process.
